Ch. 20. Contents of a scholarly edition
Version 4.0 beta
by N.N.
The text of this chapter is very much a work in progress (as is its title).
20.1 General characteristics
This chapter will discuss the contents of a full, scholarly text edition. It will be inspired by an outline written by Haraldur Bernharðsson (with input from Svanhildur Óskarsdóttir), dated 18 November 2009:
Electronic editions of medieval Nordic texts
The chapter will make a distinction between two major types of editions – those of a single manuscript and those of multiple manuscripts. It will then discuss the requirements for each type of edition (many of which will be identical, to be sure), and then move on to the practical use of the <front> and <back> elements for the preface, introduction, index and commentary.
Hopefully, this chapter will be a point of reference for other editorial projects.
